Last year over Memorial Day weekend, my husband and I flew to New Orleans to visit my parents. Of course, we had to go shopping for gifts to bring to everyone back home and so we spent quite a bit of time browsing the shops in the French Quarter.

One art gallery we visited was selling these "Don't Piss Off The Fairies" garden stepping stones. It was the first time I'd seen one, and I thought it was adorable. We bought one for my mother-in-law. It came with a humorous list of "fairy facts" which read:

• They are armed with sling shots, bows and arrows, and wands. Keep them on your side.
• Be sure the water in the bird bath is fresh and there's King Cake and Coco Cola around. They love sweets, but this leads to a serious carb high. Then you really have to tippy toe around.
• Wonderful things will happen if they settle in your garden... flowers will bloom, your trash will smell sweet, and cats will be very wary.
• They don't grant wishes. They make decisions.
• They don't wear panties.
• Their wings get waterlogged in rainstorms and they can't fly... this may be your only chance to see one.

I have a lot of great gift ideas for women at GIFTS-TO-IMPRESS.COM, but my own mother isn't really into bath and body products, or scrapbooking, or candles.... In years past for Mothers Day and her birthday I've sent her gourmet gift baskets, which she seems to appreciate.

Last Christmas she really wanted an iPod. (Unlike many baby boomers, my mom is quite tech savy and enjoys all the latest gadgets). I loved giving her an iPod because I knew gift ideas for birthdays, Mothers Day and Christmas would be set for years to come: All I have to do now is send her an iTunes gift card!

For this Mothers Day, I just logged into my own iTunes account and from there I was able to purchase an iTunes gift certificate and they emailed it directly to her! I guess that makes it a rather eco-friendly Mothers Day gift, as well, since no paper was involved and no fuel or vehicles were needed to deliver it.

It was so easy! And such a relief! In the past, coming up with good gift ideas for my mom was very challenging.

I actually received an iPod for Mothers Day from my husband and kids a couple years ago, and I absolutely LOVE it! And I love getting more iTunes gift cards for birthday, holidays, etc.!

Mothers Day is tomorrow, May 10th. I know from past experience the malls and stores are crazy busy right now, so I don't even bother going out. I'm a big fan of online shopping, and not just because I own my own retail site. Long before I opened my site, I was shopping on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Overstock.com, Zappos and other great sites.

Why do I like shopping online so much? Several reasons. I love how Amazon creates suggestions based on my search and purchase history. I get a lot of great gift ideas that way. Plus I have an Amazon credit card and I earn points that I can use to buy things on Amazon. Every now and then I get a $25 voucher in the mail from them. Plus through Amazon and Barnes & Noble I can find books my local bookstores don't carry. And I usually get free shipping. Shopping online is just so much more convenient than driving around town, looking for parking places, standing in check out lines....

Of course, if you still haven't purchased your Mothers Day gifts, it's a little late to order them online. Unless it's OK with you that the gifts arrive late. I'm always surprised every year how m any last minute orders I get... many even after Mothers Day. I'm guessing these are coming from people who don't live close to their mothers and would have to ship the gift anyway. Might as well have it shipped to her directly and avoid the hassles at the post office.
